What are your corporate management risks?
Our corporate management risks include: 1. exchange rate fluctuations, 2. the impact of medical system reforms, 3. raw materials procurement, and 4. security of information systems.
-
Could you tell me specifically what risks are inherent in raw materials procurement, and how you counter them?
We purchase raw materials used in diagnostic instruments, reagents, and other products from about 300 Japanese companies and 50 overseas companies. The procurement of important parts and materials may become difficult due to issues including revisions to the laws and regulations of supplier countries, supplier realignment, or quality concerns.
The Sysmex Group is constructing a group-wide shared framework for the unified management of information on suppliers and on industry, legal, and regulatory trends necessary to ensure stable procurement. By means of an electronic procurement system (Sysmex Trade Mission or STM) implemented in fiscal 2004 as the initial phase in a series of initiatives, we have constructed a system that will meet contingencies by sharing information with suppliers.
-
Could you tell us specifically what risks there are concerning information systems use, and how you counter them?
The Sysmex Group encourages active use of information technologies throughout the entire business process, i.e. R&D, purchasing, manufacturing, sales, planning, and management, by lending one personal computer to each employee. Employee communications and approval requests are performed through a computer network. For this reason, any extended system failure might seriously affect business operations. For important networks, we have secured alternate routes through redundancy and other means. To enhance security, we have implemented a double security scheme which includes the installation of anti-virus software in every personal computer to protect them from viruses, and the use of firewalls at Internet connections. Sysmex UK comply to ISO27001 as a part of our Business Management System.
To guard against information leakage from laptop computers, a problem that recently has become increasingly prevalent, we have made the use of fingerprint authentication devices mandatory for laptop computers likely to be taken out of offices to prevent unauthorized access by persons other than the owners.
To prepare ourselves for the worst, we have implemented a daily backup procedure that makes it possible to restore important systems that support mission-critical tasks back to the state they were in at the close of business on the previous day.
To prevent service interruption and maintain the provision of services to global customers, we have installed the servers used for the Sysmex website and e-mail servers, which are critical points of contact between Sysmex and the world, and the servers used for the Sysmex Network Communication System (SNCS), which is a high-value-added customer service, in off-premise service centres where professional engineers monitor system operations 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
